TI-Korea 2012 Youth Integrity Survey

The results of TI-Korea’s 2012 Youth Integrity Survey show that young people in Korea are more likely than adults to forgo values of integrity in the pursuit of wealth. A lack of ethical education in the schooling system was identified as a strong influence, and thus the promotion of anti-corruption/integrity education is crucial in halting this alarming trend.

Detailed information on each point mentioned above:

1. Workshops on integrity and corruption with students, teachers, parents: TI-Korea organizes workshops on integrity and corruption for children, students and young volunteers, and offers awareness education classes at schools and educational institutes. We also provide integrity training for parents, teachers, and mentors, assist them in becoming better role models, and help them organize study groups that focus on promoting ethical standards.

2. Seminars on ethics education/anti-corruption policies with provincial offices, ministries, the media: TI Korea is already cooperating with the Gyeonggi Provincial Education Office, which is responsible for the most populous province in Korea (surrounding Seoul). Following our recommendations, they now consider including integrity education in their curriculum. TI Korea will offer further seminars to provincial offices, ministries, and the media, with the aim of promoting ethics education and anti-corruption policies.

3. Establishing youth organizations: Creating a Preparatory Committee for the Korean Youth National Anti-Corruption Organization; Forming the Korean Youth National Anti-Corruption Alliance; Establishing a Korean Youth International Anti-Corruption & Cooperation Team

4. SMILE (SMart Integrity LEarning) Application: By using smart phones and TI-Korea Homepage, TI Korea provides assistance, counseling, and education on corruption issues. For example, any individual, who has a smart phone, easily can test and check his or her integrity level. In addition, SMILE provides solutions to corruption issues and accepts whistleblowers, complaints and suggestions.

5. Transparent Society Award 2013: Since 2001, TI-Korea has annually awarded this well-established prize to people or organizations, to honor their outstanding fight against corruption in South Korea. The next award ceremony will take place on the 9th of December 2013 in Seoul. We expect around 150 representatives from the national and international business, political, civil society and media sectors to participate in this festivity.
