Global Green Growth Week 2016 (GGGWeek2016)

Global Green Growth Institute organized the Global Green Growth Week 2016 from September 5 to 9 on Jeju Island, Republic of Korea. The 5-day long event aimed to bring in experts to discuss and find ways in supporting global and green economic growth, especially for the developing countries, island states, regions and communities affected by climate change effects.

The event was joined by both local and international dignitaries including country officials, ministers, (former presidents), CEOs, experts, environmentalists, press, and heads of private and public financial institutions, and projects developers.

Purpose of the event

The major endeavors of the green event was to make participants not only discuss and search green economic and environmental solutions but also the following:

  • Demonstrate current and emerging green development trends which were presented and discussed by experts from both public and private sectors
  • Showcase leadership and expertise on green finance, project development and technology/solutions
  • Connect with green technology providers, project developers and financiers and negotiate deals
  • Survey and source new green products and services related to energy, water, transportation and construction

Sessions

There were over 60 discussions session held in 5 days dealing with various green development topics and issues. These sessions/discussions included:

  • Global Green Growth Summit – convened heads of private, public financial institutions, governments and project developers from over 30 countries
  • Asia Regional Policy Dialogue on coal-renewables dilemma – brought together ministers, CEOs and leaders from Asian countries
  • Green Growth Knowledge Platform (GGKP) Annual Conference brought together experts from over 40 leading policy research institutions
  • International Emissions Trading Association Carbon Forum – held side events with topics on carbon trading, carbon footprint, etc. with participants from over 40 countries
  • World Bank Partnership for Market Readiness discussed on innovative approaches to GHG mitigation using carbon markets and pricing
  • Meeting of the Inclusive Green Growth Partnership – brought together multilateral development banks and the UN regional commissions
  • Country Focused Sessions – focused on showcasing GGGI’s projects on the ground to highlight green investment opportunities
  • New Climate Economy Africa – discussed support to African Policymakers as they navigate and harmonize policies between economic development and climate change initiatives

Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI)

GGGI is an international organization established in 2012 at the Rio+20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development to support green economic growth that includes “poverty reduction, job creation, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability”.
