The three-hour integrity education is hosted by TI Korea and supported by Korea Horse-racing Company in Korea. The KHRC is a Memorandum of Understanding co-signatory with TI Korea, and has been supporting the Chapter in various ways to promote transparency and anti-corruption activities.

Integrity Lecture 2014 Attendees

Those who attended, most of them are women, are from Ansan Pact for Anti-Corruption and Transparent Society Convention, Guri Pact for Anti-Corruption and Transparent Society Convention and Transparency International Korea Youth group (TIKY). There were 20 people who attended the integrity education lecture.

Aim:
The lecture is meant to help deepen the knowledge about integrity (and anti-corruption) among members of the groups who are themselves teachers and lectures of integrity in their respective areas.

Topics:
The first lecture was given by You Han-Beom, TI Korea’s present Executive Director. The ED centered his lecture on Transparency International’s present international development and trends, especially its anti-corruption programs and activities.

One of Han-Beom’s current development issues example is the CPI point of South Korea. The republic retained its score (at 55 over 100 points) as last year’s score. However, its ranking went up two levels higher which is a bit confusing for those who cannot understand what it means. To explain a little bit, a ranking of a country or region can go up even though their respective governments are not doing much against corruption. What was confusing among Korean observers and most citizens is that the corrupt practices seemed to become more exposed due, for example, to the Sewol Ferry disaster. Despite the exposures of such corrupt practices they did not bring down the score lower as expected by observers.

Anh Tae-Won, TI Korea’s staff and board member, talked about the newly established Korea Network on Anti-Corruption and Transparency (KNACT) and anti-corruption governance topics as well as issues. KNACT is a newly established organization initiated by TI Korea to somehow revive the former inactive K-PACT (Korean Pact on Anti-Corruption and Transparency). KNACT has more than 30 group members including public, private and non-governmental groups and institutions.
